10 Years a REALTOR®

Jerry Kelly-Dawn Alexander

I was 23. We were married, and our first son was almost a year old. I was in my second year of studies for my bachelor of education at UAlberta, and life was pretty simple. I had a really lousy job at a call centre that consisted of outbound customer satisfaction surveys. The job did have one perk, though-you could read books as you waited for a call to connect. I went to the Capilano branch of the Edmonton Public library, walked up and down the aisles, and selected a few random books. One that caught my interest was The 106 Common Mistakes Homebuyers Make (and How to Avoid Them), so I grabbed it and read it quickly in between calls. I became quite interested in real estate, and wanted to know more about the business. I didn’t know a lot of people at the time, so I searched for “how to become a realtor in alberta” online, and I landed on Royal LePage’s recruitment page. With nothing to lose, I typed in my postal code to find the nearest brokerage, which was Royal LePage Best Locations.

I met with the broker Ed Zrubak, resume in hand (not really sure why, I just wanted to make it look like I had some street cred), and decided I wanted to try it out. The only problem was, I didn’t have money to take the course, so Ed offered to front me the money until I could pay him back, and on 19 January 2005, I was a licenced REALTOR® in the province of Alberta! Needless to say, I paid the money back quickly and realized in short order that I wanted to stick with this career. However, I had committed to finishing my BEd no matter how much I made along the way, because I truly value education, and didn’t want to be a hypocrite later on when I expected my children to do the same. At the end of my final teaching practicum (one of the worst experiences of my life), it was very clear to me that I was not going to be a school teacher, despite how much I enjoyed the school environment.

So, 10 years on, I’m happy to still be in the industry. It has been a lot of fun, I’ve met some great people and visited some awesome places for conferences, and I’m looking forward to many more years to come.
