The CHAR|CUT Alley Burger Experience

01/30/11 8:09 AM

I had been hearing about these mysterious and supposedly amazing burgers served in fine company next to dumpsters in Calgary, of all places, for some time from my twitter friends, and I was quite interested in having the experience myself. When I finally had a reason to come down to Calgary to visit a friend and crash Banff Western Connection, I contacted Connie, Queen of CHAR|CUT to see if there was any way I could persuade her to hold an alley burger event the night we were in town. Amazingly, she said yes, and I quickly began planning and promoting this event on facebook. I suspected it would be kind of big, because there were a lot of people like me who had heard about it and wanted in. Well, day of the event, and 56 are registered with 17 maybes! Considering their biggest turnout so far had been about 20, this was quite interesting. You konw how facebook events are-30 say they are coming, a dozen show. Not the case here. They made 53 burgers that night! Nobody was turned away! I even gave Camilla at #yycctv2230 the heads up about the event, and she sent a cameraman. The poor guy had to deliver a burger to Hollywood Heath and didn’t even get a bite, but it was cool when he ate it on air.

Owly Images

It was a great event with a great turnout of people. A testament to both the vitality of the twitter community in Calgary and the innovation of our friends at @CHARCUT.

My photos here.

Here’s the news reel:

From the facebook event: CHARCUT is one of the top 10 new restaurants in Canada (6th, in fact http://enroute.aircanada.com/en/articles/canada-best-new-restaurants-2010?p=6), and they do something that no other place does: serve $5 burgers out their back door. It’s generated quite a cult-like following, and I really want to try it. I contacted the owner Connie to see if she’d do it for us because Liz Barr is coming to town from Niagara and Laurel Hounslow is coming from Victoria and I’m coming from Edmonton. She agreed, but wouldn’t commit to a time or quantity of burgers. So basically, if you want one, you’ll have to get there early!

Like their facebook page and follow them on twitter, because that’s how they communicate the time and quantity of burgers. I’m pretty sure there will be enough for everyone. I hope, at least.
